Family Fun Literacy Day 2018

Family Fun Literacy Day 2018

17th August 2018

C.S. Lewis Square

EastSide Learning hosted our second Family Fun Literacy Day in August 2018. Despite some rainy weather, the event was a big success - families from East Belfast and beyond enjoyed a day of fun activities designed to engage children in reading, writing and storytelling!

Here's just a few photos from the day:

The ever-popular Nerve Centre returned to run their fantastic iPad animation workshops. Some truly astonishing films were made by these talented children - future animators one day?

Our Giving Library was present once again to provide free childrens' books to all. Huge thanks to the kindness and generosity of those who donated books.

The Gathering Drum kept everyone warm with an energetic and wonderfully noisy drum circle!

And throughout the day there were no end of other activities to fire the imagination. Elaine Gowdy's live drama sessions braved the rain with puppets and dress-up, while Hannah Ferguson filled our marquee with colour, showing us all how to make gorgeous tie-dye bunting featuring the names of favourite books.

The aim of the day was to build childrens' confidence with learning, and the day was packed with a variety of fun and engaging activities designed to focus on a different area of learning. Children could learn about storytelling with the 'build-your-own fairytale' magic of Story Cubes, craft their own comic strips - even learn to make eBooks using Minecraft as a tool! Our friends at Libraries NI hosted an eBooks storytelling workshop at the Holywood Arches library, as well poetry classes with the genius that is Colin Dardis.

All in all it was a fantastic day: a huge thanks goes to everyone who came and took part. This year's event showed that a little rain can't dampen the enthusiasm children have for reading and storytelling!
